10 Ways To Become A Morning Person


Learn to face your day with the determination that it will be amazing! I know what your saying “ugghh mornings! I hate mornings…..” I know because I used to be just like you. For as long as I can remember I always said that I was not a morning person. I used to consider myself a night owl who functioned much better in the wee hours of the night.

When I started my first job in Radiography it meant that I would have to deal with early mornings. “yuck!” For the first year of my job every morning I slept in until the last possible minute. I pressed the sleep button 3-4 times until I finally dragged my butt out of bed feeling groggy and unmotivated. I would run around trying to get to work on time and would arrive feeling rushed and tired. Often it would take me until 12 to feel fully awake.

This routine was anything but relaxing and I eventually realized that it wasn’t the right way to start my day. When I started to clean up my diet and move over to a plant based diet I felt so much better and that made me want to change other aspects of my life. I am a believer in energy and that the energy you put out is what comes back to you. So it only makes sense that how you start your day has a huge impact on how the rest of your day goes. I was determined to do a big overhaul on my morning routine so that I could start my morning on the right foot.

As Lemony Snicket said Morning is an important time of day, because how you start your morning can often tell you what kind of day your are going to have.

I always find the transition to colder weather makes me want to slow down and I sometimes struggle to get up early but these are some of the things that I do to make my morning easier and to start my day right.

10 Ways To Improve Your Morning

  1.  Go To Bed Early

I feel like this is pretty easy to understand. If you need to wake up earlier that means you need to go to bed earlier. Some people think that they can maybe get by on 5-6 hours but even if you get used to surviving on smaller amounts of sleep and you feel “fine” you are still doing damage to your body. During sleep your body is repairing damage done throughout the day and the liver works to detox the body of chemicals and toxins that you were exposed to during the day.

There are many studies on the subject and a lack of sleep can change your hormone levels such as increasing cortisol levels. Cortisol is an adrenal gland hormone which helps the body deal with stressful situations and it is during the middle of the night that levels are lowered. Without proper sleep however levels can stay higher than normal and if this happens for a sustained amount of time then it can cause numerous problems. Some of these concerns are impaired cognitive function, blood sugar imbalances and lowered immune function. So get in your 7-8 hours!

2.   Leave Enough Time In The Morning

This is such an important part to starting your morning the right way. If you don’t leave enough time in the morning then that can leave you feeling rushed and tired by the time you get to work. Instead write down all the things you would like to incorporate in the morning and the approximate amount of time that it will take and then decide an appropriate amount of time.

3.   Be Prepared

Prepare your things for the next day before you go to bed. If you go to the gym in the morning then set out your gym bag with gym clothes, fill up your water bottle and keep it in the fridge. Make your lunch the night before and maybe even your breakfast for the next day. This will help make your morning go smoother and allow you to get the most out of your morning.

4.   Go To The Gym

I used to work out at night but in the last few years I find that it just keeps me awake at night.  Working out especially intense workouts can be very stimulating for the body and for some it will prevent a restful sleep.  Working out in the morning will help give a kick start to your metabolism, keep it revving high for the rest of the day, and will help give you the energy to start your day right.

5.   Listen To Some Motivating Audio

Whether that is relaxing music or motivational talks, listen to whatever will get you in a positive mood. Once I started doing this it really helped to get my mind in the right place and get me excited for my day. Some of my favorites right now are Brendon Burchard and Wayne Dyer.

6.   Drink Water

One of the first things that I do when I wake up is drink a large glass of room temperature water. After sleeping for 8 hours without consuming any fluids your body gets dehydrated. Drinking water will help to wake up your digestive system and re-hydrate your body. Some people like to add some lemon juice but just be careful of the acidic nature of lemon juice and use a straw.

7.   Eat A Good Breakfast

I am not a person who feels hungry first thing in the morning so I tend to keep things light at first. I often start with fruit at home while I am getting ready for work and then I’ll bring a nice green smoothie or overnight oat/buckwheat groats in to work to eat. It’s important to start your day with something nutritious whatever it is that appeals to you, it will help kick start your metabolism and give you energy to start your day.

8.   Meditate/Take Some Quiet Time

You have your whole day to get to all of the tasks on your to do list so take this time to do a little something for you. Take some time to quiet your mind and set the tone for the rest of your day. You can enjoy your coffee/tea outside, meditate, read a book, write in your journal or whatever you find relaxing. One of the things that I find has the biggest impact on my day is meditation. It has had a great impact on my ability to control my emotions and to feel peaceful throughout the day. I don’t always get a large amount of time in the morning but I try to get in anywhere from 5-20 minutes in the morning.

  1. Be In It For The Long Game

From the story:  The tortoise knew that even if he was slow, that if he was consistent focusing on the finish line that he would get there eventually.

What this means for you:

  • Don’t get caught in the small details
  • I see people obsess about
    • Micronutrients
    • Protein
    • Having an off day
  • Realize that having one off meal or one bad day won’t matter in the large scheme of things
  • Focus on the long game; knowing that the majority of your actions will matter the most
  • If you have an off day, don’t let it phase you — simply get back to it the next meal or day
  • Don’t get distracted by “quick fixes or fad diets” — there is no shortcut to improving your digestion or energy level or losing weight
    • The issues that you are dealing with now didn’t occur overnight but happened because of years of habits/practices
    • So it it will take time to help support your body to get you feeling better

2. Consistency 

From the story: The hare runs gets cocky and decides to have a nap in the park and when he wakes up the tortoise has already finished the race. 

What this means for you:

  • It is the daily consistent actions that make the biggest impact
  • I had someone ask me if it was bad that they had indulged in a very rich meal that week
    • It’s not the one off meals that will make the most difference but the things that you do every single day
    • So having pizza once a week isn’t the problem — but eating a donut everyday will have a bigger impact because it’s everyday
  • Focus on foods that help you to feel good (give you energy; mental clarity) the majority of the time with treats in between
  • I know of people who cut out sugar from their daily coffee (that’s it) and lost weight after a month

3. Make one or two manageable changes at a time 

From the story: The hare was overconfident and nearsighted and didn’t look at what would actually work to get him where he wanted to get.

What this means for you:

  • Focus on changing one or two things at a time
  • When we try to change too many things at once it has a few effects:
    • 1. If we notice an improvement in our energy we won’t know what change in our diet or lifestyle it was that made the difference
    • 2. It is often very overwhelming mentally, emotionally and sometimes physically making it much less likely that we will follow through
  • So if you want to cut out sugar, cut out caffeine, and cut out dairy I would suggest trying to cut out ONE of these for a few weeks and then when that feels okay then move on to the next
  • Many people give up before they even start because they see someone like me who has been doing this for 4 years and tries to cut it all out overnight which is just not realistic
  • Start with where you are — make changes that you can and just start — know that it may take trying a couple times before you are able to fully cut something out or make changes stick
  • I didn’t change overnight but was consistent in my efforts doing one thing at a time over the last 4 years
